I first went natural in 2014. I remember when I first Big Chopped I got all the, “what in the world did she do to her hair” stares. If you have ever made any drastic changes to your appearance then you know exactly what I’m talking about! At the beginning of my natural hair journey, I learned so much not only about my hair but about myself. Through my natural hair journey, I learned who I was as a young 20 something black woman. I also learned to love and accept myself for who I was and who, I was becoming. Around 2016 I began making DIY hair and skincare products because products that were on the shelves at the time had a lot of harmful ingredients and I just felt that a lot of companies were trying to hide things. Then when I started researching more about these nasty ingredients in a lot of hair and skincare products that target women of color. My passion for DIY products grew and I really started to research how to properly formulate products and what vegan ingredients were. Thus Melanin and Curls was born!
